Serving LGBTQ+ Seniors: Inclusive Senior Living

The number of LGBTQ+ seniors is set to rise dramatically over the next few years:

  • Because the U.S. Census has never measured the number of LGBTQ+ older adults residing in the United States, we must rely on various studies. There are an estimated 3 million LGBTQ+ adults over 50 today.
  • By 2030, there will be 7 million LGBTQ+ seniors.

This growth means LGBTQ+ representation in senior living communities will be higher than ever before. Leaders who want to be competitive need to prepare for this reality.

Unique challenges, unique needs

Compared to their straight peers, LGBTQ+ seniors face distinct challenges:

Inclusion isn’t optional. For LGBTQ+ seniors, it can be the difference between isolation and belonging.

These factors shape consumer behavior. For LGBTQ+ seniors, finding a community isn’t just about amenities and services. It’s about whether they’ll feel safe, supported and truly welcome.

How communities can adapt

Communities that want to stand out to this unique audience segment can take intentional steps now.

Physical plant and amenities:

Offer flexible living arrangements — consider co-living, roommate options and seasonal stays and how they fit into your operational model
Ensure spaces reflect inclusion (e.g., gender-neutral restrooms, private living options)

Services:

Provide ongoing diversity and sensitivity training for staff and residents.
Create support networks within the community to combat isolation.

Marketing and culture:

Use inclusive language (e.g., “partner” instead of “husband/wife”). Ensure applications, residency agreements and other paperwork avoid heteronormative language.

  • Feature LGBTQ+ residents in imagery and storytelling. Just like other prospects, they need to see themselves reflected in materials to envision themselves living in your community.
  • Advertise in LGBTQ+-friendly outlets and partner with advocacy groups.
  • Cast a wider geographic net — LGBTQ+ seniors may be willing to relocate to communities where they feel accepted and supported.

The competitive advantage of inclusion

By 2030, LGBTQ+ seniors will be a sizable share of the market. Communities that demonstrate inclusivity will earn trust, while those that ignore this audience risk missing out.

Now’s the moment to prepare.

The growth of the LGBTQ+ senior population isn’t a distant trend — it’s happening now. Communities that intentionally create welcoming environments will stand out as leaders.
